I love entertaining. It’s no surprise I love to cook, but I especially adore cooking for family and friends. Any excuse to entertain is a good one in my book.
I know entertaining can stress a lot of people out. But over the years, I’ve learned how to entertain without wanting to have a panic attack.
Simple, seasonal food is always best. When you concentrate on fresh ingredients, minimal preparation, and balanced flavor profiles, you set yourself up for a successful and easy get-together. Entertaining should be about spending time with your company, not spending the entire time in the kitchen.
That’s why I really love these Goat Cheese Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry Bites.
They look particularly impressive and elegant, are created with bold and complementary flavors, and are very easy to make.
Serving these little smoked salmon puff pastry bites often gets quite a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs,’ but they really are very simple to put together. These bites use frozen puff pastry, a herb-studded goat cheese mixture, and quality store-bought smoked salmon. Fresh dill, lemon, and capers tie it all together.
Sure, they take a little time to assemble, but they’re worth the extra bit of effort. I like to use a star-tip to pipe the goat cheese which makes for great presentation.
The flavors of these smoked salmon puff pastry bites are just so delicious. Salty, fresh, creamy, and so savory.
I love to serve these bites with sparkling wine. My bubbly of choice? Gloria Ferrer wines. I love their wines so much I even created an entire bubbly-themed brunch around it once. I pair these savory puff pastry bites with Gloria Ferrer’s Sonoma Brut and Blanc De Noirs. These elegant sparkling wines are perfect for entertaining. As California’s most awarded sparkling wine house, Gloria Ferrer has received more than 500 gold medals and 50 90+ ratings in the last 5 years.
And you guys know how much I love my bubbly. The blush pink Blanc De Noirs is floral, fruity, and creamy. The vanilla and cherry notes bring a nice balance to this appetizer and pair well with the savory, briney flavors. The Sonoma Brut is aged for a minimum of 18 months and is always a wonderful choice to serve at any cocktail party.
I hope that you make and enjoy these Goat Cheese Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry Bites, preferably with a cold glass of bubbly! What are your favorite cocktail party go-to’s and appetizers for entertaining? Let us know in the comments below.

Goat Cheese Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry Bites
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Cook Time: 15 mins
- Total Time: 30 minutes
- Yield: About 20 bites 1x
Description
Goat Cheese Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry Bites are an elegant and impressive appetizer perfect for entertaining. They’re even better when paired with some bubbly!
Ingredients
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- Egg wash (1 egg + 1 tablespoon water)
- 4 ounces mixed herb goat cheese, room temperature
- 2 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill, plus more for serving
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest, plus more for serving
- 3 ounces smoked salmon
- 2 tablespoons capers
- Sea salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Bake the puff pastry. Using a rolling pin, lightly roll the sheet of thawed puff pastry on a floured surface to smooth out the creases. Cut the puff pastry into circles, using a 1 1/2″ or 2″ round cutter. (You could also use a metal 1/4 measuring cup.) Score the center with a smaller cutter or a metal tablespoon, piercing the center all over with a fork. Space the circles an inch apart on parchment-lined baking sheets and brush with egg wash. Bake until evenly browned, rotating the tray once halfway through, about 12 minutes. Let the pastry cool before filling.*
- Make the goat cheese filling. Stir the room temperature cream cheese, herb goat cheese, lemon zest, and dill together until evenly mixed. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper.
- Assemble the bites. Pipe the goat cheese filling into the center of each puff pastry bite (I used a star tip). Slice the salmon into thin strips and roll into a loose rose or spiral. Place the salmon spiral on top of the goat cheese. Garnish the bites with additional lemon zest, fresh dill, and capers. Enjoy!
Notes
*If your puff pastry rounds rise too much in the center, simply take the back of a metal tablespoon and create a little ‘well’ by pushing the tablespoon into the cooked pastry.

How far in advance can these be made and once made will refrigerating them ruin the pastry?
HI Brenda,
Yes, I would not recommend refrigerating these after making them as the pastry will become very soggy. You can make the filling ahead of time (2-3 days) and you can bake the puff pastry the day in advance, although it’s always best when puff pastry is made fresh. However, you can crisp them up again in the oven the day of. I hope they come out great!
I expected more flavor – they were a bit bland, and turned out to be a lot of work to make than I anticipated.
