These homemade sweet potato dog treats are simply made with only three ingredients: sweet potato, cinnamon, and olive oil! Your pup will love these sweet potato chews for dogs.
I love making homemade dog treats. Not only is it way more cost effective, but you can control the ingredients in them and ensure your pup has a healthy treat.
Have you ever read the list of ingredients in certain dog treats? It can get scary.
But these healthy sweet potato dog treats only have three ingredients.
Sweet potatoes, cinnamon, and olive oil. That’s it.
They do take a while to bake, since they bake at low temperatures to ensure that chewy consistency. However, once they’re in the oven, they’re pretty ‘set it and forget it.’
This means that the only real effort to make this homemade dog treat is slicing the sweet potatoes. This recipe is crazy easy, and your pup will go nuts for them.
Best of all? They’re so good for your dogs!
Benefits of Sweet Potato for Dogs
Sweet potatoes are rich in the antioxidant beta-carotene (responsible for its orange hue), which converts to vitamin A in our pet’s body.
Vitamin A is an essential vitamin for dogs, which helps promote the health of:
- a dog’s skin and coat
- a dog’s eyes
- a dog’s muscles and nerves
In addition, sweet potatoes are high in fiber, low in fat, and a rich source of essential nutrients such as calcium, potassium, iron, and vitamins C and B6.
The dietary fiber found in sweet potatoes help support a healthy digestive system in our pets.
But there are still some precautions when it comes to sweet potatoes for dogs. Carbohydrates should never be used as a dog’s main diet, and sweet potatoes should be consumed as a treat (in moderation) only.
Other Benefits of These Sweet Potato Dog Treats
In addition, these sweet potato dog chews also contain olive oil and cinnamon.
Olive oil for dogs can be beneficial to their skin, coat, immune system, cognitive health, and more, while cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, brain function, and anti-viral benefits for pups.
I hope that your pup enjoys these three ingredient sweet potato dog chews! Do you enjoy making homemade dog treats for your four-legged best friend? Let us know in the comments below!

Sweet Potato Dog Treats
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Cook Time: 3 hours
- Total Time: 3 hours 5 minutes
- Yield: 8-10 1x
Description
These homemade sweet potato dog treats are simply made with only three ingredients: sweet potato, cinnamon, and olive oil! Your pup will love these sweet potato chews for dogs.
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet potato
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 250°F.
- Wash your sweet potato thoroughly and then slice it into ⅓” thick slices.
- Place the sweet potatoes on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush each sweet potato slice on both sides with olive oil and a light sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Bake in the oven for 1 1/2 hours. Flip over and bake for another 1.5 hours or until tough and chewy all the way through.
- Let cool before giving to your pooch.
- Keep stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
Notes
You can slice the sweet potato chews long ways or make them round like I did. If you have large dogs and need a bigger dog chew, go with long ways.
Don’t slice the potatoes too thin (thinner than 1/4″), or they will crisp in the oven and not turn out chewy.

Hello! Thanks for such a wonderful recipe, I will definitely cook it for my dog, I think she will be delighted. A definite plus for me, this recipe is that it does not take long to cook and is very simple. I agree with the comments above, they look delicious enough for humans
Did anyone even make this recipe before commenting/giving 5 star reviews?????? I followed the recipe exactly but the oil was a very bad idea. At 3.5 hours, the sweet potatoes were still very soft and soggy. I might try the other Tasty recipe which does not include any other ingredient besides sweet potatoes. Might not take forever to dry or toughen up.

Sorry these didn’t work for you, Tonya! Did you just lightly brush the potatoes with the oil?
